Why and How We Baptize
Baptism symbolizes our old self has died, as Jesus died, and our new self is risen, just as Christ rose from the dead. Baptism is intended to be our first way of identifying with Jesus and our first act of obedience to God. Through baptism we take on the name of Jesus Christ as a wife takes on the name of her new husband. The church is the bride of Christ and baptism in His name signifies submission to Christ as our Lord and head. Jesus said, "I and my Father are one." Jesus and God are one in Spirit and in incorruptible Flesh (2 Corinthians 5:19; Colossians 1:15-19*; Hebrews 1:1-3). Calling on the name of Jesus specifies who God the Father intends for us to follow. God has many names, and there are a myriad names of idol gods, but there is only one name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12). It pleases God the Father to call on the name of His Son JESUS (Matthew 28:18; Colossians 1:19; 3:17; 2 Peter 1:17†; 1 John 2:23)! For they are one God (Deuteronomy 6:4; 10:30; Mark 12:29)
